Modak and More

It's that time of the year when people bring home idols of Lord Ganesha/Ganpati Bappa.A period of renewed hope and happiness.As always we had the lunch we have every year...ordered from Ketkar Bandhu at Dadar.The most important item being Ganpati Bappa's favorite sweet...Modak.This is either stuffed (and then steamed or fried) or made of mava and available in sweetmeat shops.We always have the Ukadiche Modak or steamed ones stuffed with grated coconut and jaggery.There you go...we have our version of dumplings.....all you sui mai,dimsum and momo fans.My grandmom used to fill modaks with one rupee coins when my dad was a kid (when he was old enough not to swallow then).


The other items included Steamed Kothambir Chi Vadi which was savoury with gram flour and coriander as the main ingredients.This is soft in texture.

Batatyachi Bhaaji....the simple typical Maharashtrian vegetable dry dish with mustard seeds,curry leaves and turmeric

Masale Bhaat that is spiced rice

and Flowercha Rassa,a gravy made of potatoes and cauliflower

That's the typical food one has in this festive season.

Manisha your pics make me miss my mom in law. She makes amazing melt in your mouth modaks. It is difficult being away from home during festivals

Had a fascinating time at Malcolm Baug,Jogeshwari,thanks to the invitation of my friend Perzen Darukhanawala Patel (also known as Bawi Bride ) at the lovely Jer Villa. Baugs are colonies set up by Parsis,mainly the N.M. Wadia Trust and this one is so named as it was bought from an Englishman named Malcolm.This was earlier a hunting ground.We were privy to these lovely stories, thanks to the presence of our friends and archaeologists Kurush and Rhea Mitra Dalal.Malcolm Baug has been developed like a hill station and has quaint bungalows with lovely gardens. Baugs were set up for needy Parsis by Bai Jerbai Wadia and her sons.Others include Cusrow Baug,Navroz Baug,Rustom Baug,Jer Baug and Ness Baug which are gated communities that have buildings and gardens.A nominal rent is collected but the upkeep is undertaken by the trust. A Heartwarming Goud Saraswat Brahmin Meal

My tryst with Saraswat food started with a lovely book I picked up in Pune by Mrs Nadkarni.Written in Marathi,it had a plethora of dishes and as I tried them one by one,I realized thateach had a unique flavor with just a minor variation in ingredients..Soon after I came upon Rasachandrika,a cookbook by the Saraswat Mahila Samaj printed in 1988.This being in English,made it easier for me to cook the long list of vegetarian dishes it had. When I saw Authenticook had a Gaud Saraswat Brahmin (GSB) meal planned for this Saturday,I was thrilled.Having tried some at the home of our Mangalorean origin GSB friends Pradeep and Chethana Rao,I know this was going to be a treat. Discovering Pathare Prabhu Traditions

The Pathare Prabhu community celebrates the Adhik Maas or the extra month in the leap year with a Haldi Kunku Programme.This year being the centenary year of the PP Mahila Samaj,they had a special function in their community hall in Khar,Mumbai.This Marathi speaking community was known to own large parts of land in Girgaon.They gave a lot of importance to education and consequently were known for their knowledge,reforms and Western thought.Amongst the most famous from this community was Raobahadur Narayan Dinanath Velkar who had an important role in the institution of the Central Library at the Town Hall,Mumbai.Mukandrao Jaykar started the Aryan Education Society and set up Sharda Sadan,a school for girls in Girgaon.Today the community gives interest free loans to children in their community so that they may complete their education.In December,the Pathare Prabhu Charities function provides vegetarian and nonvegetarian food to the entire community Today (21st June 2015) ...
